It takes a lot of labors, time and machine equipments to produce a quality plastic injection mold. Some time we could save more money by using low hardness steel and still have a very durable tool. So it's important for us gain some knowledge about mould steel.

Characteristics of mold steels

1. H13 steel is often used because it's excellent for mirror polishing. Mould some part that requires mirror finishes are often made of H13. It can be hardened to HRC52 with high hardness, toughness, and high temperature strength.
2. S136 steel has good performance of corrosion resistance and wear resistant. It's hardness can be 45 to 55 and it is easy to weld and polish.
3. 718H is always used to big and long life mould, such like house appliance mould, computer shell mould, etc.
4. P20 is the old standard pre-hard steel, and it is still quite popular. It does have a tendency to work harden and contain hard spots, but, with carbide tooling so commonly used, this is not much of an issue. It is approximately 32 Rockwell and is easy to weld and polish.
5. Aluminum can be much more durable than in the past and are commonly used in prototype tooling and short-run projects. QC7 is probably the most popular mold grade aluminum. It is very easy to machine, easy to weld and can be polished to a high lustre.
