Insert Molding is a molding process of injecting plastic into mould after putting metal parts, electromechanical parts, and other discrete parts into mould and making integrated plastic products. Nowadays insert molding is very popular, especially for electric products, which requires putting copper nut into product before it is manufactured.
Steps of insert molding:
1. A custom-built mold is loaded. Then the inserts is put into the mold manually or by robot.
2. Molten plastic is injected into the mold.
3. After products cool down, they are removed from the mold.
4. Products are separated from the sprues and inspected.
Advantage of insert molding:
•Reduced assembly and labor costs
Manufacturing steps are reduced by insert molding. And thus cost is reduced.
•Reduced size and weight
By eliminating fasteners and connectors, and by combining the physical strength of resin and metal inserts, insert molding can make smaller and lighter products.
•Increased reliability
With every part tightly securing in thermoplastic, an insert molded plastic products prevents part loosening, misalignment and other problems. The thermoplastic resin also provides improved resistance to shock and vibration.
